The end of War (1944) coincided also in Albania with the period of political vendetta, which was later transformed by the communist regime in a real government system based on the arrest and persecution of political opponents, starting with former leaders, intellectuals, traders and land owners.

This wave of violence which lasted 45 years was transformed in executions, in arrests, deportation or expulsion of tens of thousands of Albanians. This database includes the names of all persons executed for political reasons, prisoners who lost their lives in prison, political prisoners and exiled political prisoners who were sentenced to more than 10 years and who have already received the status of political prisoners. From 1946 to 1950 there were 20 labor camps, but in the period of 1950 – 1990 there were built 90 others. In the archives of the Ministry of Internal Affairs until 1990 result convicted 25 thousand political prisoners, but since there are no statistics of the prisoners of the period 1945 to 1946, and of prisoners with small sentences, it is believed that political prisoners in Albania were between 30.000 and 34.000. According to a report published in 2016 by the Institute of Studies of Crime and Consequences of Communism (ISCCC) in Albania, the political prisoners were 26.768 men and 7.367 women, prisoners died in jail due to prison conditions were 984, and 308 others lost their mental ability. According to the same source, 5.577 men and 450 women were sentenced to death and killed. The bodies of prisoners executed or who died in prison or during forced labor, or because of illness, were not returned to relatives.

In the period 1944 – 1991, over 6.000 people were executed in Albania with or without a court order (mostly by being shot or hanged) and their bodies were never returned to their families for burial. According to information taken from witnesses and documents, in Albania have been identified so far 29 hot-spots where it is suspected that there are more buried bodies of political prisoners, killed during the communist regime. The International Commission on Missing Persons (ICMP) and the Albanian authorities have publicly committed to launch a campaign for the identification and search of the people missing, undertaking a serious investigation in order to present reliable information on the existence of these hot-spots.

According to the official numbers compiled recently by the government institutions responsible for awarding compensation for the damage caused during the dictatorship, the internments decided were 12.500, a number this that does not consider minors, children of prisoners. According to a report published in 2016 by the Institute for Studies of Crimes and Consequences during Communist (ISCCC) in Albania, in the period 1944 – 1990 there were 59.009 prisoners. According to the same report the number of dead people due to the conditions of internment was 7.022.
